Coombe - Melba Estate, Coldstream

You are here

Thursday, 17 March, 2016

Have you ever wondered what was behind that hedge on the corner of Maroondah and Melba Highways in Coldstream? All 53 members on our trip found out on Thursday 17th March on our visit to Dame Nellie Melba's estate!

We were definitely not disappointed either!! We arrived at 10am on a gorgeous autumn morning just in time for morning tea of scones, Peach Melba jam and lashings of cream, served in the recently created restaurant in the old stables. We were then treated to a most informative tour of the extensive gardens, which were inspired by Nellie Melba's travels in Europe and designed by William Guilfoyle in 1910. There are many 'garden rooms' in the 7 acres, each with its own fascinating story. Even the hedges themselves hold many secrets!! After our tour we had time to wander at leisure, purchase some Peach Melba jam or fresh bread from the Providore, or sample their current release wines at the cellar door.

We then travelled on to Yering Meadows Golf Club for a lovely 2 course lunch in the Terrace Restaurant, with its stunning views over the greens to the valley and hills beyond.
