Kinglake - Yarrambat

It was the shortest daylight day of the year and what seemed like the wettest and coldest, when our intrepid members headed to Kinglake via Yarra Glen.

With umbrellas and gumboots we visited the Fern Acres Nursery at Kinglake West and spent some time exploring their vast array of tree ferns and other water loving plants!! We wandered through the green houses and fern glade, which had a few interesting surprises hiding amongst the foliage!!! Many of our members bought plants and some purchases some wonderfully warm socks that they had for sale, which they instantly put on!!!

Lunch at the Kinglake Hotel was the highlight of the day with its open fire, hospitality and delicious food.  Members were given an insight into the terrors of the bush fires that engulfed the area in 2009. We had hoped to see the regeneration of the forrest en route to Yarrambat, but the weather really closed in causing the windows of the bus to fog up, so our view was limited to say the least.

In Yarrambat, we visited the Rivers Nursery and it was well worthwhile. They had a huge selection of plants and homewares, and many of us took the opportunity to make purchases of both.

We had a long wet trip home in grid locked traffic, but it was a great day out.
