Churchill Island

On Thursday 22nd April 43 members met at Chambly for our trip to Churchill Island. It was a beautiful autumn morning and unseasonably warm, with a predicted top of 28C, so everyone was chatting happily on the 1½-hour trip there. We arrived at San Remo at low tide and the mud flats were clearly visible as we crossed the bridge onto Phillip Island and then to Churchill Island. We enjoyed our morning tea in the picnic ground with a lovely view out over the paddocks, filled with Scottish Highland Cattle, towards the bay.

Dividing into two groups we were taken on a fabulous tour of the gardens, sheds and buildings by one of the rangers who shared many stories of the early days on the island. One of the cows had a 6-week-old calf and her supply of milk was more than the calf’s requirements, so needed milking regularly!! Jane, our president, treated us to a milking demonstration!!

We had about ¾ hour to wander the grounds ourselves and enjoy the wonderful views of the water through the trees before making our way back to the bus.

San Remo hotel’s function room was our lunch stop, where we enjoyed roast beef or fish and chips followed by a delicious apple pie and ice cream. We had time for a short stroll along the foreshore before boarding the bus for our return trip, arriving in Camberwell at 4pm.

Thank-you Karina and Pam for organizing such a lovely day.
