John gave us fascinating insights into the diverse world of orchids from his specialist knowledge, research and long standing passion for these amazing flowers. He illustrated many species orchids found in all countries of the world and in every colour and shape, for example the paphiopedilum from Thailand and the stanhopea from central America. We were surprised to learn that there are 1500 different orchids here in Australia. 80 percent of the world’s orchids grow on trees, many of which are now at risk from forest clearing and poaching in tropical locations.

Orchids have tiny seeds which lack nutrients and these must contact a fungus to grow in the wild. For the home orchid grower John recommended a potting mix consisting of horticultural bark, perlite and charcoal for best results.

Ben thanked John for his presentation and Carmen Roach was the winner of the raffle prize of an orchid and book on orchids. Several members also won orchids which John donated from his conservatory.

John has been growing orchids for over 40 years and currently has his collection of about 800 species growing in the Heritage listed Stonnington Conservatory in Central Park, Malvern East. People are welcome to visit if they want to see orchids up close.
John is  currently President of the Orchid Species Society of Victoria, Vice President of the Australasian Native Orchid Society (Vic branch), Co Chair of the Australian Orchid Foundation (a not for profit funding body supporting researchers and hobby growers in all things orchid) and a Trustee of the World Orchid Conference Trust which oversees the triennial orchid conference due to be held next in Taiwan in February 2024.
