During the meeting the 'book sub committee' gave an update on the progress of a book being compiled to celebrate 40 Years of our club.
Acknowledgement was made to Dorothy Laver OAM, former Boroondara councillor, who was the instigator and first President of the club on 12th July 1979. We are hoping the book will be ready for publication soon.

Jennifer Rickerby (Secretary RHSV) & Don Rickerby (President RHSV) were guests at our Club's 40th birthday meeting, 11 July 2019. http://www.rhsv.org.au

Don Rickerby, presented a history of the RHSV.  He first began with congratulating the CMGC on achieving 40 years and to thank the club for the long association and support they have given to the RHSV over the years.  In particular the member assistance given at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show hanging basket display and their attendance at the Gardeners Day Out held at Deakin University, Burwood.

The RHSV celebrated their 170 years of association last year. It was founded on 25/11/1848 by John Pascoe Fawkner and Governor Latrobe and was officially granted the title of Royal in 1884 by Queen Victoria.  It began with a very impressive list of names on the board, such as:

Baron Von Meuller, William Guilfoyle, George Brunnings, Redmond Barry, Sir Frederick Sargood, William Sangster, Lord Mayors and many Lords.

Don showed photos of artwork depicting Melbourne at the time of settlement and Government House Latrobe Cottage in Jolimont

The first flower show in Melbourne was held in the Botanical Gardens and the RHSV has displayed at the Exhibition Building every year of their 170 year history.

The RHSV is the leading horticultural body in Victoria and works with Government and industry in areas such as: Moomba, garden week, wartime gardens, depression support and disaster relief – Ash Wednesday.

It is the central coordinator of amateur horticulture in Victoria and Australia and provides judging standards.

Don provided 2 presentation baskets of garden products and 13 copies of  "A Seed Is Planted" on the history of RHV as raffle prizes. A kneeling Pad donated by a member was also raffled.
