Susan explained that her business, Herbs 2 Home, started in the drought.  Susan explained that the Green Smart tubs they use are self-watering and provide a great environment for vegetables and herbs.  They come in 10 or 15 litre sizes and include a reservoir so that plants within this closed system can have adequate water at all times.

From an initial tub which Susan purchased as a Christmas gift for her husband Andre, the great results that they got meant that they soon had 35 pots in the garden!   This led to them demonstrating the pots and then preparing vegetable and herb pots for sale.  The plants flourish as they don’t have to compete for water or nutrients with other plants.

The pots don’t fade, crack or break and have overflow holes so that the plants won’t drown and mosquitos cannot access the water.  You must use quality potting mix and Susan advises the use of Rockdust, an organic product.  During summer top up with water weekly.

The soil can be refreshed several times after the crop is finished but use Rockdust to ensure enough nutrients for the plants.

Plants are placed directly into the potting mix but if using mint, keep it in a separate pot or it will take over.

Susan then introduced Ian Munro from Munash, who spoke to us about his products, Rockdust and Renew.  Rockdust, a natural mineral fertiliser, is formulated with balanced nutrients that retain moisture, eliminating the need for soil wetters and can be used on sandy soil or clay.  Only a pinch weekly is required.

Relevant websites are www.munash.com.au and www.herbs2home.com.au

Both the Green Smart pots and Rockdust are great for worms.  These products can be purchased in bulk at a discounted price – the small pots retail for $49.95 and large ones for $59.95.
