Guest speaker Kirsten Moore of Mt Joy Cottage outlined her many practical tips on growing dahlias from their tubers.
She explained that dahlias have relatively simple needs – water, sun, food and care in staking. Her images illustrated the many varieties of these beautiful flowers as well as the colorful dahlia gardens at Mt Joy Cottage.
Some of the key points for success were:
- plant around Melbourne Cup time
- pinch out tips to promote bushy growth
- disbud for bigger blooms
- divide every second year
- store tubers over winter in damp peat or wood shavings
