Spring Planting and Tool Maintenance

Peter Pitman
Thursday, 8 August, 2024

Ben welcomed back to CMGC Peter and Joan Pitman and helper Jessica, noting Peter’s long association with the nursery industry as a horticulturalist. The Pitmans had arranged an enticing display of flowering pots, including cyclamen, pansies, heath and polyanthus to inspire members to add some colour in the garden for spring.

Peter emphasised the importance of sharp working tools for all the spring garden tasks ahead. He demonstrated his tried and true tips for keeping tools such as secateurs, shears and garden spades in good working condition by first ensuring the tool is clean and dry, then oiling the tool (which also helps protect against rust) and sliding a sharpening stone such as a pumice stone along the blade surface in smooth even strokes before wiping the blade clean.

The floral box door prize was won by Geoff.
