John showed a number of photos of orchids including:
- Sarcochilus orchids – grow in gullies and ravines along the east coast of Australia and like humidity.
- Dendrochilum Tenellum – won the Maribyrnong Show in which there were 23,800 flowers to be judged. Looks like reeds growing in a pot.
- Lycaste Skinneri, Lycaste Kiam ‘Malcolm’ and Blue Ginger
- Stanhopea Gravealens – hangs down from a hanging basket and perfume is fantastic
- Slipper orchid – originates from China, is not big. Paph micranthrum is found in the tall grass of China, and is utilised for medicine. To discourage this those found digging up the orchid, the act is subject to the death penalty.
- Zygo Peplum – the perfume id beautiful
- Den Warrior and Den Jayquest
- Crucifix Orchid – colonised in Australia, originally from Hawaii
- Pencil Orchid
John then shared pictures of his orchid hot house and discussed a slug infestation.John responded to questions:
- To get orchids to flower they require the right combination of light, air movement and water
- Best time to pot Dendrobium is at the end of winter, careful you don’t damage new growth as this is next years flowers
John then demonstrated hanging a Vander Orchid from a roll of gutter guard, and this was the major raffle prize.
