Oasis Horticulture owns a nursery at Springwood in the Blue Mountains and a wholesale nursery located at Devon Meadows, near Cranbourne. They supply Bunnings, Masters and Aldi in most parts of Australia.
Malcolm has worked for Oasis for 19 years, and was at Woodlyn prior to that.
Malcolm had a lovely display of seedlings for us, as follows, and let us know we could
have a punnet each to take home, which was very well received:
Pansy Moonface was named after Bert Newton and flower of the year about 20 years ago.
Dwarf Cineraria
Viola 'Blue Porcelain' which yields lots of flowers.
White foxgloves.
Woodlyn pansy (Floriana and Oasis, the same company)
Normal sized broccoli
Mini cos lettuce
Malcolm also explained how tulips and cyclamens are now available most of the year, by tricking the bulbs into thinking it was time to bloom.
We were all interested to hear that guided tours are available at Devon Meadows and Suzette has promised to look into this for a future visit.
Malcolm then spoke about the way seeds are raised today. Seeds are sourced in bulk from agents. Several types of seeders are used in an automated process where germinating seeds are transferred into punnets and plug trays. These are set out in climate-controlled igloos and monitored daily. They are then transferred to wholesalers, and then to retailers. They have a limited "shelf life" and are dumped if not sold within three weeks.
